Analytical Corner: Food Insecurity: A Global Challenge that Needs a Coordinated Response

|

Location: Cedar Hall, HQ1-1-660

OVERVIEW

Food insecurity has become a major global challenge, exacerbated by Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. Soaring prices, combined with supply bottlenecks, have increased food insecurity and triggered inflation around the world, which is particularly costly for low-income households. Tackling this crisis requires coordinated action on a global scale: (1) targeted humanitarian and financial support towards vulnerable households, (2) promote international food supply while avoiding distortive trade restrictions, (3) supporting food production and distribution, and (4) invest in climate-resilient agriculture. The IMF also has an important role, monitoring vulnerabilities, providing policy advice and capacity development, and extending financial support.
