Price Statistics (PRS)
Target Audience
Government of Bangladesh officials (compilers and key data users) who would benefit from gaining new, or refreshing existing, knowledge of the concepts, principles, sources, and methods used to compile the consumer price index (CPI).
Qualifications
Participants are expected to have a degree in economics or a related field, engage in regular compilation or use of the consumer price index, and have proficiency in Microsoft EXCEL.
Course Description
This non-resident course will build capacity on the concepts, principles, sources, and methods used to compile consumer price indexes (CPIs). The course provides an overview of international best practice and standards for the compilation of CPIs; including conceptual foundations, index calculation formulas, developing index weights, selecting outlet and item samples, treatment of missing prices, linking indexes, and specific compilation issues noted by the participants. The course will emphasize specific issues related to updating and revising the CPI for Bangladesh.
Course Objectives:
Upon completion of this course, participants should comprehend and work with:
• The fundamental structure of price indices.
• The sources and methods to compile price index weights.
• The basic price index formulae, their biases, and shortcomings.
• The international classification structure for the CPI.
• The sources and methods for compiling the CPI, including handling issues such as missing products, product substitution, outlet closure, outlet substitution, quality change, and linking rebased indexes.
